Sri Lankan Ambassador in Pakistan Air Chief Marshal Jaya Lath Wearakkody (Retd) Thursday said there were close ties between Pakistan and Sri Lanka and both the countries can explore possibility of co-operation in the fields of economics and education apart from other sectors.
He said this while talking to reporters during visit of the 9-member Sri-Lankan parliamentary delegation led by Speaker of Sri Lanka parliament, Chamal Rajapaksa, here at the Lahore Museum. Sri Lankan Ambassador said a Pakistani delegation would visit Sri Lanka next month during which a joint commission would be constituted.
Emphasising the need for agreements between the two countries in the fields of economics and education, he said there exists vast scope of co-operation in both the fields and the two countries can get benefit through agreements in these sectors. He also said both Pakistan and Sri Lanka have close relations and there are a number of other fields in which both could cooperate.
Sri Lankan Ambassador further said that relations between the two countries could be further strengthened through greater bilateral trade ties. Earlier, Sri Lankan Ambassador accompanied by the visiting Sri-Lankan parliamentary delegation visited Lahore Museum. Director Lahore Museum Humaira Alam briefed the delegation members about the historic relics on the treasure trove of the Museum.
It may be noted that currently trade volume between Pakistan and Sri Lanka is around US $300 million and both the countries had already signed a number of agreements to further promote trade during President Asif Ali Zardari visit to Sri Lanka in November last year.
