Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has passed unanimous resolution demanding abolition of the tradition of bride money on the marriages in the province through taking measures to purge the society of the menace. The resolution tabled by Manawar Sultana said that nowadays the collection of walwar (bride money) is growing in the society, which is not only anti-Islamic, but also repugnant to the social values.
Through the resolution the assembly recommended to the provincial government for taking measures for the abolition of the tradition to clean the society of the menace. The Provincial Minister for Social Welfare and Women Development, Sitara Ayaz said that though the tradition was started with good intentions of supporting poor families in marry their daughters, but now it had become a cancer for the society. She said that the provincial government has no objection to the resolution and will support it.
The Speaker Kiramatullah Khan put the resolution to vote and the house adopted it unanimously. Through the second resolution that was also passed unanimously, the assembly demanded of the provincial government for the opening of a branch of the Bank of Khyber (BoK) in Tehsil Samarbagh of the district Dir Lower.
She said that according to the policy all government employees have to withdraw their salaries through banks. Moreover, she said that a large number of people of Dir Lower are expatriate Pakistanis also sending their remittances through banks. The population of Samarbagh, she said had crossed the figure of 0.3 million, but, there is only one branch of the Habib Bank Limited and the branch of the BoK is only in Timergara and people are facing difficulties in depositing and withdrawing their money. Furthermore, due to heavy rush, people have to stand in queues in front of only one HBL branch to withdraw and deposit their money.
Therefore, the resolution recommended the opening of a branch of Bank of Khyber in tehsil Samarbagh. In third resolution the assembly asked the provincial government to recommended strict implementation of the bonded labour laws to enable children to live their life according to rights given to them under the constitution of Pakistan. This resolution also adopted unanimously.
The house also unanimously passed the resolution of Syed Jaffar Shah regarding provision of protection to the bee-keepers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in Punjab. In his resolution, Syed Jaffar Shah said that the bee-keepers of Swat, Shangla and Kohistan migrated to the plain areas of Punjab for better look after and increases in their production capacity. However, he said that they are facing severe hardships as professional dacoits loot their farms.
The assembly asked the Inter-Provincial Ministry for contacting government of Punjab for provision of security to the bee-keepers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The resolutions of the Dr Zakirullah Khan of PPP and Mufti Kifayatullah for the handing over of the collection of the central excised duty on tobacco to the province and regularisation of the employees of the Establishment of Homoeopathic Dispensary Project in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were lapsed due to the absence of the movers. The speaker Kiramatullah Khan put the resolutions to vote and the house adopted them unanimously.
