Parliamentary Secretary Housing, Zafar Iqbal Nagra here on Tuesday speaking in Punjab Assembly has said that sewerage system of Lahore was inadequate due to increase in population of the city. He said the system of sewerage of Lahore was initiated in 1938 for improving sewerage and drainage the department had procured a feasibility regarding central and south Lahore from the leading national consultancy, National Engineering Services (Nespak).
He said three projects cost estimated to Rs 3155 million had been undertaken in Lahore and are to be completed by 2013. Punjab Assembly on the same day passed a resolution tabled by MPA Humaira Owais regarding torture of woman in the country and asked for curbing of these ugly trends.
She said in the resolution that these incidents were the outcome of unavailability of rights granted under religion. She said women have been given rights in inheritance, right to take Khula, be independent in economic affairs and in case of being a widow they have a right to marry without permission from Wali or family. A resolution by legislator Mehr Ishtiaq regarding kickbacks in PIA was kept in pending. The resolution asked for steps to be taken against people involved in fraud in the department. Two resolutions one by MPA Haji Zulifqar and other by MPA Sardar Salim Bhatti were defeated and not passed by the House.
A resolution by MPA Muhammad Ilyas Chinioti regarding construction of Chiniot - Sarmar Ada Wala Road that links up with Sahianwa was passed by the House on the occasion. To a query parliamentary secretary said that during Shahbaz Sharif's tenure as CM Punjab in 1997-98 an operation clean-up was undertaken. He said encroachments in block 3, 4 6, 7, 8 11, 12, 15 sector B had been finished earlier and those encroachments that had propped up again would be dismantled again.
He further answering a question said that Rs 2.43 billion were spent on improvement of sewerage in Sialkot in year 2009-2010. He further said that Rs 505 billion were spent on improvement of water supply in Multan in 2008-2009 and 2009-2010. A number of proposals were presented in the house. The chair later adjourned the house until Wednesday (today).
