Pakistan Railways General Manager (GM) Operation is to submit a list of locomotive manufacturers of the world today (Friday) before Justice Nasir Saeed Sheikh of the Lahore High Court. This is in relation to the writ petition challenging PR's Tender for 150 locomotives restricted to USA origin only, sources in the Pakistan Railways told Business Recorder here on Thursday.
The sources further said that Behzad Mahmood, Additional General Manager (Mechanical) and Munawar Khan, Director (Procurement) might appear before the Lahore High Court in this regard as GM Operation M Ishfaq Khattak would be in Islamabad for an important meeting with Federal Minister for Railways. Railway sources are of the opinion that besides USA, many countries like Germany, Japan, Canada, China, Brazil, Australia, Russia, Korea etc. also manufacture diesel electric locomotives.
Moreover as per official documents available to Business Recorder, PR fleet currently comprises locomotives from Canada, Germany, Japan, USA and China. In the past PR fleet also included diesel railcars from Ganz of Hungary, Clyde of Australia and Caterpillar of UK. Interestingly Pakistan Locomotive Factory, Risalpur, is also listed amongst the world locomotives assemblers/ manufacturers.
The Railway Locomotives Factory, Risalpur was set up in 1993 by Hitachi of Japan. Apart from Hitachi of Japan this factory had imported technology for manufacturing of locomotives from Adtranz of Germany, General Electric of USA, and Dalian Loco Factory of China.
