The Supreme Court has a hectic schedule in the current week starting from Monday. Besides, regular benches, the Judges sitting in four-member benches will have busy schedule when they once again don on their black robs after a break.
A four-member bench comprising Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry, Justice Muhammad Sair Ali, Justice Ghulam Rabbani (not to sit on 24) and Justice Khalil ur Rehman Ramday, will resume hearing on Monday on a suo motu case regarding alleged corruption by the former chairman Pakistan Steel Mills.
The same bench will conduct proceedings on another suo motu case related to violation of public procurement Rules 2004 leading to loss of billions of rupees of exchequer caused by the National Insurance Company Ltd.
On the same day, the second four-member bench of Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Raja Fayyaz Ahmed, Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali and Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa would resume hearing of pleas filed by Opposition leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Shahid Orakzai against appointment of chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
On Monday, a larger bench comprising Justice Mahmood Akhtar Shahid Siddiqui, Justice Jawwad S Khawja, Justice Khilji Arif Hussain and Justice Tariq Parvez will resume hearing of arguments of the counsels for a number of dysfunctional judges who are defending the issue of taking oaths under annulled provisional constitutional order of 2007.
These judges of superior judiciary were rendered dysfunctional under a decision of July 31, 2009. A total of 72 former judges were issued show cause notices but they had rendered unconditional apologies but certain dysfunctional judges preferred to defend their position.
On Tuesday, the four-Judge bench headed by the Chief Justice will conduct proceedings on an issue regarding award of contract of mining and exploration of Reko Diq gold and copper mines in Balochistan province.
The issue of privatisation of Habib Bank Limited will also find its priority among other cases before the other four members' bench headed by Justice Javed Iqbal on the same day. On Wednesday, the Chief Justice's bench would resume progress achieved on its directions regarding pleas for uninterrupted transmission of TV channels. The bench has another significant issue to adjudicate upon regarding joint venture agreement between Capital Development Authority and Multi Profession Co-operative Housing Society.
On Thursday, subsequently the same bench would take up PML-N legislator Syed Zafar Ali Shah's plea over an issue of National Accountability Ordinance (Amendment) 2010, seeking Court's interpretation to declare it unconstitutional.
The other-four member bench headed by the senior most Judge of the apex Court, Justice Javed Iqbal, on the same day will conduct proceedings on missing persons' case.
On last day of working week, first bench will hear another suo muto case regarding an untoward incident which had taken place between police and lawyers on October 2010 in Lahore. The tragic incident of car race held in Rawalpindi on December 5, 2010 which claimed a number of precious lives will also be dealt with by the same bench on the same day under its suo motu jurisdiction. The supplementary lists issued for Monday and the cases to be taken up by the same bench enlist constitutional petitions filed under Articles 184 of the Constitution regarding protection of lives and property of the people of Balochistan.
Another plea filed by Independent Media Group SMC pvt; Ltd under Article 184 of the Constitution about the issue of telecasting Cricket World Cup 2011 rights on GEO/PTV, is also expected to be taken up by the same bench.
