Information Secretary Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), Fauzia Wahab has blamed judicial system flaws behind rising ethnic violence in society and urged to identify and address them efficiently. She was addressing a seminar on "No to Incitement for Violence" on Friday organised under the aegis of Center for Peace and Democracy. Abid Hasan Minto, Dr Mehdi Hassan, Chairman Human Resource Commission of Pakistan, S. M. Masud and others spoke on the occasion.
Fauzia Wahab stressed the need to identify loopholes in the judicial system. According to her, only 20 percent ethnic violence culprits are convicted, while 80 percent victims are set free in the system. She urged the participants to recognise their abilities and align their efforts to turn country into a better state. We have to fight back and would not allow anyone to promote anarchy in the society, she added.
Speaking on the occasion, veteran intellectual Dr Mehdi Hassan urged the government to extend the scope of reconciliation to the smaller political parties in Balochistan and Sindh, claiming to be nationalist parties. He criticised the religious parties for spreading differences instead of promoting Islam in society. Other speakers of the seminar lamented the division of society on Governor Salman Taseer's death. They urged the government to show courage instead of promoting double standard simply to preserve their vote bank.
The participants also criticised media for spreading anarchy among masses on the issue instead of playing a neutral role. According to them, it is need of the hour to differentiate blasphemy from the blasphemy law. We could not tackle issue of extremism without a strong political system, fully restructured as per modern day requirements. They also criticised parliamentarians for not supporting Sherry Rehman and stressed the point that those who are provoking the issue are real culprits.
