Punjab Food Minister Chaudhry Abdul Ghafoor has said that agreements for the sale of 1.478 million ton of wheat have been finalised out of which the food department has so far released 100,000 ton wheat to different private parties. While the parties concerned by April 30, this year will lift the remaining stock, the Minister said in a statement issued here Tuesday.
He said that government will not increase the price of wheat despite the increase in rates of this commodity in international market and wheat will be provided to purchaser on agreed price of one thousand per maund. Chaudhry Abdul Ghafoor further said that the government would ensure provision of quality eatables to the masses under 'Punjab Food Safety and Standards Act 2011.' He said under this act, the government would set up an authority to monitor the preparation, transportation and sale of food items. Strict action will be taken against the persons involved in selling sub-standard food items, he added.
Meanwhile, a high level meeting to review the export of wheat was held under the chairmanship of Senior Advisor to Chief Minister Sirdar Zulfiqar Ali Khan Khosa, here Tuesday. The meeting reviewed the export of wheat of last year crop and decided that government would continue export of wheat so that Pakistani product could be introduced in international market. It was also observed that Food Department would sell the wheat on agreed price by 31st April 2011.
