Government College University Lahore Environmental Protection Society (GCU EPS) will plant as many as 10,000 trees in the City celebrating 2011, as the International Year of Forests. GCU Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Khalid Aftab on Tuesday inaugurated the GCU EPS Tree Plantation Campaign by planting a tree at the university's Sports Complex.
Addressing the students, Professor Aftab said that the United Nations General Assembly has declared 2011, as the International Year of Forests and GCU would celebrate it with firm commitment to tree plantation and raise awareness on conservation. He said that GCU has set a target of planting more than 10,000 trees in Lahore and GCU New Campus at Kala Shah Kaku.
He said that Punjab Forest Department and Pakistan Botanic Gardens Network Secretariat is providing saplings to GCU for its plantation drive. The Vice Chancellor called on the faculty members and students to ensure the conservation of each tree they plant. GCU EPS Tree Plantation Campaign Adviser Dr Zaheerud Din said that all senior GCU faculty members would plant tree on the university campus to motivate the students to take part in this drive.
