Ecosystem of Pakistan needs immediate attention, as the decreasing level of ground water and pollution in wetlands spoiling environment. This was stated by the National Programme Manager of Ministry of Environment's Wetlands Programme Dr Ghulam Akbar, while addressing a ceremony held here on Friday in connection with International Wetlands Day. Educationists, environmental experts, teachers and a large number of students attended the function.
"Water is imperative for life and existence of all living organisms on the planet. It is our sole responsibility to conserve water and save water resources from pollution," Akabar added. Akbar urged students to promote environment friendly activities and make their efforts to bring positive change in behaviours of their near and dear ones so that environmental protection initiatives could be mad successful and result-oriented.
He said global warming and melting glacier is another threat for biodiversity, however, collaborated efforts are required to tackle these issues. He also expressed grave concern over rapidly decreasing species of birds and said that laws would be strictly implemented for prohibition of illegal hunting of birds. A number of other speakers also laid emphasis on preservation of valuable wetlands and asked concerned authorities to play their role for preventing damages to biodiversity.
