A total of 50,000 families will be rehabilitated and an area of 100,000 acres will be supported for agricultural cultivation in the flood-affected areas of Sindh.
This was stated by wife of USA Ambassador in Pakistan and USAID Representative in Pakistan Dr. Marilyn Wyatt, while addressing a ceremony in village Ghulam Mohammad Palipoto near Sujawal here on Sunday. She said that 7,000 families will be supported for rehabilitation and 14000 acres of land will be supported for cultivation in flood-affected areas of Thatta district.
Dr Wyatt said that this assistance was being done in the first phase of Sindh Agriculture Recovery Project. She said that flood caused great losses and the people of Sindh suffered losses of their belongings, crops and their livelihood.
Dr Marilyn Wyatt said that it is a privilege for the United States to play a small role in helping the flood affected farm families and get them back on their feet. She added that this project is a part of $600 million US response to floods. She that initially USAID provided seed, fertiliser and cash assistance and training to each farm family to help with planting and harvest.
She said that this assistance helped the families to recover from floods, create broader employment opportunities and jump to economic activity in the region.
The USAID Representative said that during the first phase, all affected farmers in seven districts across Sindh including Thatta received their seed and fertiliser.
She said that USAID will continue to help the flood affected people n their rehabilitation.
She distributed a cash grant of Rs 2000 each among 25 farmers so as to initiate the second phase of rehabilitation process.
US Consul General in Karachi William Martin and concerned official accompanied her. Later, she along with her entourage visited Makli Hill monuments and then left for Karachi.
