The Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) has made work safety of its employees top priority in the business plan and the ultimate vision is to make an "accident free KESC." This was stated by Tabish Gauhar, CEO of KESC, at "Safety Leaders Award" ceremony held on Monday, to honour the best safety performers in distribution and generation categories.
Gauhar said that when the KESC envisioned becoming a National Safety leader in 2009, the greatest challenge was to change the mindset of employees who accepted the work related accidents in the electricity company as inevitable part of their work package. As a matter of fact, safety was their least priority.
However, the CEO said, the Company upgraded health and safety of the employees as one of the top priorities, and part of its business plan; allocated resources and deployed a team of professionals to run health and safety department as a round the clock function.
"As a result, today, occupational health and safety are embedded in all facets of our activities and operations, and we can see a robust safety culture taking root throughout the organisation," he remarked. "To progress towards safety excellence, we will need to adopt an aggressive approach towards 'proactive safety management' by mitigating all latent hazards before they become accidents."
In the ceremony, Region-III (Distribution) and Combined Cycle Power Plant at Korangi were declared Safety Leaders - 2010 in their respective categories, and received cash awards of Rs 100,000, along with a "Safety Trophy" and "Certificate of Excellence". Amer Zia from distribution and Tahir Ali Khan from transmission and generation received safety trophies and certificates.-PR
