Federal Minister for Environment, Hameed Ullah Jan Afridi urged the international community to cooperate with Pakistan to fight the adverse affects of climate change.
"Pakistan is committed to fight this unparallel tragedy, however, being a country with limited resources, we need co-operation of international community in this hour of need," said Afridi while chairing Core Group meeting on Climate Change along with Executive Secretary, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Christiana Figueres here on Tuesday.
The minister said that Pakistan is among those countries, which are directly facing adverse affects of climate change. Vulnerability of Pakistan due to environmental degradation is not hidden at all. He further said that global warming and climate change were major threats to the world community. Pakistan would not be silent spectator of climate change and global warming.
Core Group on climate change is playing constructive role in formulating effective policies to cope with the hazardous affects of environment change on war footing. Melting Glaciers, extreme weather situation, floods, droughts and sea level rising are some of the issues that are being faced by Pakistan in different phases.
The minister further said that climate change policy has been finalised with support of environmental experts, advisers and negotiators that contribute in policy decisions, frameworks and other related decision making. Executive Secretary UNFCCC, Christiana Figueres said that Pakistan was playing leading role in inculcating awareness about domestic and global environmental degradation.
Earlier, in a meeting with the Environment Minister Christiana Figueres exchanged views on programmes and plans by UNFCCC in different sectors. Pakistan needs emergency relief in flood hit areas and international community should come forward to expedite rehabilitation activities, she added.
On the occasion a documentary on floods 2010 was presented and different presentations were made by Malik Amin Aslam, Shafqat Kakakhel and other experts and negotiators. The launching ceremony of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) guidebook for Pakistan was also held.
