Joint Investigation Team (JIT) has claimed to have chased the Mehran Car used in assassination of Slain Minority Affairs Minister Shahbaz Bhatti and have arrested seven persons involved in this incident, sources privy to investigation said here on Thursday evening.
"We have reached close to assassins of Shahbaz Bhatti and very soon they will be taken to task", the sources revealed to Business Recorder. JIT, team constituted to probe into the assassination of Shahbaz Bhatti, visited I-8 sector and has drawn a detailed map of the crime scene.
The JIT headed by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Police Bani Ameen started investigation of the assassination and held the security squad of slain Minister for questioning, besides recording the statements of the eye-witnesses and family members. The First Information Report (FIR) of the incident was registered in I-9 Police Station by Sikandar Bhatti, brother of the deceased minister.
The Minorities Affairs Minister Shahbaz Bhatti was shot dead on Wednesday morning outside his residence when he was on his way to meet his mother in the same area. The police managed to prepare sketch of one of the assassins of the Minister, upon information provided by the Minister's driver and other eye-witnesses. The security squad consisting of both Police and Frontier Constabulary were questioned by JIT.
It is a big question that how the assassins managed to enter in the I-8 sector which is covered by police stationed at all entry points including Islamabad Highway, Faizabad and 9th Avenue, sources privy to Investigation team said. According to eye-witnesses, the assassins, riding a white Mehran Car intercepted the Minister's car and opened fire with automatic weapons and then one of them came close to the car and then opened burst fire keeping his hand inside the car, sources said while quoting the eye-witnesses including driver of the minister.
After committing crime the assassins managed easy escape from the scene and it is yet to be ascertained from where they escaped, as all roads leading outside the sector I-8 have check points, sources said, adding that it is being expected that they have used the link roads of Faizabad to come out of the area bypassing the check points.
They said that the investigators have also held the owner of the kiosk 'Chappar Hotel' for questioning, which is just opposite of the gate of the slain Minister's residence. It is being expected that some accomplice of the assassins who might be sitting on kiosk and when minister came out of the house he signalled to the people riding the Mehran car, sources said. They said that investigators are looking on all aspects of the incident and are hopeful to reach the assassins soon.
