Some eight power projects having the capacity of generating around 1,100 to 1,200 megawatt of electricity are facing delays because of contractual obligations, said Board of Investment (BoI) Chief Saleem H Mandviwalla during his brief visit to Karkey Karadeniz Uretim rental power ship here on Monday.
The Turkish rental power ship, which was anchored on November 24, 2010 and supposed to contribute some 232MW electricity to the Karachi grid, has so far failed to commence its operation because of contractual issues, which is not only creating financial problems for the company but also making rental power more expensive to Karachiities. While talking to the media Mandviwalla informed that the modalities of Commencement of Dispatch (CoD) were yet to be finalised hence the government of Pakistan was not incurring the expenditure cost of the power ship.
He said that there were eight other power projects which were facing delays because of contractual obligations. These projects, he added had the capacity of generating around 1,100 to 1,200MW of electricity. Mandviwalla said that on the directives of Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani it has been decided to give partial CoD to the Turkish company to add the required electricity in the grid shortly.
Furthermore, he said the government was extending its all out support to facilitate the company to start production by current month. To a question, Mandviwalla said that according to an agreement, the Turkish Power Company would provide 232MW electricity from its power ship to the distribution company but the government was striving to acquire its whole production of 320 MW. Meanwhile, Nuray Atacik, Director Karkey Karadeniz Elecktrik Uretim said the tariff of the rental power had been finalised and the company would charge US$0.16 cent or Rs 13.76 per unit from the distribution company.
