The Punjab Agriculture Department has established 'Farmers facilitation centers' in Potohar region as the wheat crop is reported to be attacked by pests' infestation (Rust/aphid) due to the prolonged wet spell and cloudy weather.
According to the spokesman of Agriculture Department, wheat in Punjab has been cultivated on an area of 16.5 million acre and condition of the crop is satisfactory as the off take of quality wheat seed, urea and DAP fertiliser was better up to December than last year.
According to the spokesman, regular monitoring by Extension and Pest Warning staff is underway to avoid any eventuality. The spokesman further said that immediate instructions have been issued by the Director General Agriculture Extension to the field staff especially in high humid zone ie Lahore, Gujranwala and Rawalpindi divisions to arrange meetings by involving Extension and Pest Warning staff to survey wheat crop and prepare strategy to combat problems if any.
The advisory has also been issued to the farmers for clipping of disease affected leaves for the burial and use of recommended fungicide in case pest infestation increased to the economic threshold level. The spokesman disclosed that stalls have been set up by the Agriculture Department across the Potohar region in order to provide guidance to the farmers at their doorsteps. However, situation is under control and the teams are working in the area to monitor the situation.
