Two students of Aitcheson College on Tuesday launched an NGO "The Independent Living Foundation" with a motto "From Disability to Employment" in order to help disabled and less privileged class of society.
Speaking at the launching ceremony at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Bilal Mazhar Chaudhry (Founder) and Furqan Zafar (Co-Founder) both students of Aitcheson College, said that according to a report of World Health Organisation (WHO), 10 percent population of developing countries constitute of disabled persons. More than 3.5 million people in Pakistan are suffering from different kinds of disabilities, they said. The NGO would also be helping poor students in getting free education. Arrangements would be made to facilitate poor children to getting their education absolutely free of cost.
They said that the Independent Living Foundation had also joined hands with a number of City Hospitals for free-of-cost treatment of the people recommended by the Independent Living Foundation. Though it is not an easy task, but the Foundation would continue all its efforts to ameliorate the sufferings of the disabled and poor people.
The founding members of NGO have also urged the government to provide jobs to the disabled persons as per quota. They said that according to law 2 percent government and 1 percent private jobs should be reserved for disabled persons but it is a matter of concern that the law is not being implemented properly. The disabled persons could play an important role in prosperity of the country as they have some special God gifted abilities so special attention should be given to them, they said and urged the government to ensure implementation of quota system in jobs for disabled persons.
