Pakistan is not getting funding for its most important hydel power project Bhasha dam, from any external source to generate cheap electricity. Sources said Pakistan had formally requested Japan to fund Bhasha dam project. In its response, Japan explained its position on financing mega hydropower project like Bhasha dam and showed unavailability to meet Pakistan's demand.
Pakistan is desperately looking a financier for Bhasha dam. It had for this purpose placed the project on the list of development projects presented at the Friends of Democratic Pakistan forum held at Tokyo. This forum denied support to the project on grounds that it was planned in a "controversial territory."
It was a big blow to Pakistan since it did not expect such response from the donors, particularly from the countries that claim themselves as friends of Pakistan. Again after completing homework, Pakistan presented the Bhasha dam's case to the US during Pak-US strategic dialogue. The US response was no different of either. The government was not discouraged by a negative response for Bhasha dam project and it decided to allocate Rs 10 billion from its indigenous resources for the purchase of land for the dam.
