The wheat growers have called upon the government to supply them gunny bags for storing the crop. The demand was made during a meeting of Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) here on Friday. The growers called for immediate supply of gunny bags as they were temporarily storing the harvested wheat in plastic bags, which they consider to be harmful.
They also called for fixing Rs 1,200 per 40kg as procurement price for wheat because it was being sold at $440 in the international market. They said that although the wheat harvest had started in Tharparker, Digri and Mirpurkhas areas however the government was yet to make its procurement centres functional. The growers asked for inclusion of their representatives in the procurement committees so that transparency in the process could be made certain.
The meeting also called upon the government to speed up the rehabilitation work on river embankments and the irrigation infrastructure. The meeting was presided over by SCA's President Syed Nadeem Qamar while growers including Syed Anwar Bachani, Syed Aijaz Nabi Shah, Nawaz Ali Samejo, Dr Roshan Khoso, Khadim Hussain, Mir Sikandar Talpur and others attended.
