The 26th International Multi Topic Symposium organised by Institution of Electric and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) was inaugurated by Dr Atta Ur Rehman Former Federal Minister and former head of HEC in Karachi. A large number of engineers, scientists, academics and top executives of engineering concerns attended the opening ceremony.
This seminar was devoted to Engineer Farooq Nadeem Vice Chairman IEEEP Karachi who died in the air blue crash last year. Glowing tributes were paid to Engineer Farooq Nadeem by Engr. Asif Siddiqui and a slide presentation on his life prepared by Ms Erum Abbasi was also shown.
Dt. Atta Ur Rehman speaking on the occasion delivered a presentation on the "Way Forward for Pakistan a knowledge based economy". He said that the way forward requires vision, honesty and a technology competent leadership. He gave the examples of China and Korea. He said truth is stranger than fiction and this is born out by what is happening in stem cell technology and other areas. He showed many examples like aero planes that will not require internal fuel but will run on oxygen available in the atmosphere or cars made of intelligent material that will fix their own dents.
He said his main thrust was to develop human resources and if he had more time he had already in place schemes for foreign university campuses from France, Germany, Korea, Italy etc to be established in Pakistan, which would have revolutionised education in Pakistan. He said a large number of PhDs were created and Pakistani students were selected on true merit to study in foreign universities with the government bearing all their expanses. He said because students were selected on merit they performed well and the feedback about our students was favourable.
Engr S. S. A. Jaffri Vice President South of IEEEP Karachi centre in his key note address also emphasised the importance of human resource and the high quality of man power available in the country. He said all is not lost because we still have hope and when one has hope the biggest problems can be surmounted. Engr. Tahir Saleem Chairman IEEEP Karachi centre welcomed the guests, while Engr. Navaid Ansari presented the vote of thanks.-PR
