A division bench of the Lahore High Court here Wednesday issued notices to interior ministry and Chairman National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a petition challenging appointment of Rana Zahid Mehmood as Director General NAB Punjab.
The bench comprising Justice Chaudhry Iftikhar Hussain and Justice Ahmad Farooq Sheikh also issued notices to attorney general, advocate general Punjab, FIA and IGP for March 24. The bench also issued notices for the same date on an application praying to stop Rana Zahid Mehmood from functioning immediately. The petition was filed by affectees of Canal Motors who challenged the investigation in the case and eligibility of the NAB Punjab DG Raza Zahid.
Muhammad Azhar Siddique representing the petitioners said appointment of Zahid was made on contract in violation of rules and regulations and liable to be declared null and void.
The counsel contended that the SC had declared contract appointments against law and constitution, therefore, the appointment of the respondent is also unconstitutional. He accused the NAB Punjab DG of exercising his influence in the matter and removing the investigating officer Rana Waqas who held investigation on merit and declared Rana Qaiser and others guilty. He stated that the matter was reported to the NAB chairman and the inspector general Punjab through various applications but to no avail. He prayed to the court to declare the impugned appointment unconstitutional and sought directions to transfer investigation of Canal Motors scam to previous investigating officer Rana Waqas.
