Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan on Tuesday called for formation of high-level judicial or parliamentary commission to fix responsibility on those, who were instrumental in the release of CIA operative Raymond Davis.
Speaking at a news conference in response to President Asif Ali Zardari's address to the joint sitting of the Parliament, Chaudhry Nisar lashed out at the government for its past three-years performance, adding that the government completely failed in checking corruption and resolving the problems of masses.
On the issue of Raymond Davis, he said that it was unfortunate that a major incident took place, but no one was ready to tell the truth to the nation. He demanded that there should be a high-level judicial or parliamentary commission to investigate and expose the role federal and Punjab governments, other 'institutions' and the judge who were responsible for the release of Raymond Davis. "The nation must know as who was responsible for the release of Davis," he added.
To a question regarding the 'institutions' behind the release of the Davis, he said that Punjab Government spokesman Senator Pervez Rashid had already named those who played the role to get Davis free. He also categorically rejected any role of the Punjab government in releasing Davis and the disappearance of the victims' families. "Whoever has played the role in releasing Davis and disappearing of the victims families must have the moral courage to tell nation the truth," he maintained. The leader of the opposition criticised imposition of Rs 53 billion new taxes through ordinances, adding that it is ironic the coalition partners are silent over what he said that the authority of the National Assembly has been snubbed.
Chaudhry Nisar also defended opposition's protest during the presidential address, saying that the opposition adopted a joint stance to register protest during the presidential address in a democratic way. He claimed that 48 percent members of the National Assembly and about 50 percent Senate belonging to opposition parties staged walk out during the presidential address, adding that President Zardari address to the Parliament was not an address by head of the state but was an address by leader of the coalition partners-the PPP, ANP and MQM without suggesting any way out to steer the country out of the existing challenges.
About the next strategy of the opposition parties in the coming sessions of the National Assembly and Senate, he said that the opposition parties (PML-N, JUI-F, JI and PPP-S) in their interaction had vowed to come up with more pro-active stance in the coming sessions of the two houses. "Now the opposition parties will not let the business as usual," he said.
To a question, he said that it would be premature to say that the opposition parties were going towards a grand opposition alliance. However, he underlined the need to take a joint line of action by opposition parties on the national issues. When asked whether the PPP government will complete its remaining tenure, he said, "though the government is not capable to be in power furthermore but until and unless the PPP is enjoying majority in the National Assembly with its coalition partners, MQM and ANP, no one can dethrone the government through democratic means.
Regarding the repeated US drone attacks in tribal areas, the opposition leader said that the opposition would now force the government that there should be an end to the policies based on 'hypocrisy' on the drone attacks and would also raise voice for the implementation on the joint resolution passed by the joint session of the parliament.
