Secretary General Interpol (International Police) Ronald K Nobel said that Interpol had foiled a terror bid during the ongoing Cricket World Cup 2011 by arresting a suspect from Maldives.
A terrorist, who planned to carry out terrorist strikes during the World Cup, was trying to go to Sri Lanka from Maldives to execute his nefarious plan, Ronald said while addressing a joint press conference with Interior Minister Rehman Malik here on Thursday after their meeting in the Interior Ministry.
Rehman Malik handed over Red Book, regarding the information about terrorists to Interpol Chief on the occasion.
Ronald said that a man who travelled to Maldives from Karachi was arrested, as he wanted to carry terrorism in Sri Lanka. Ronald said that Pakistan was facing terrorism and Interpol would continue to extend its support for elimination of the menace once for all. To a query regarding the desecration of Holy Quran, Interpol chief Ronald said that the incident might encourage religious extremism. "We will use all possible means to ensure that incidents of religious hatred are not used to target a specific group or followers of a certain religion," Ronald said.
Terming the Red Book handed over to Interpol by Pakistan an asset, Ronald said that it would help nab the terrorists and Interpol would issue Blue Warrants of these terrorists.
He said that Interpol would assist Pakistan in training the police and intelligence personnel to enhance their capacity and capability to fight terrorism and crime effectively.
