Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is giving strong backing to a reassessment of the international emergency response to nuclear incidents and a review of nuclear safety measures following his first high-level meeting with key UN players since the Japan incident.
Ban said in a statement that he convened the meeting and tele-conference Friday to take stock of the international response to the latest developments at Japan's Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant which faces an escalating crisis following the earthquake and tsunami two weeks ago. The UN chief encouraged states to consider lessons learned from Japan and adopt innovative measures to strengthen nuclear safety.
