'There is no one but Allah to see or hear our pains' Mai Soni, mother of four disabled children, said during a visit to Bin Qasim Town here on Monday. Mai Soni, resident of Acharan Mohalla Ibrahim Hyderi near Korangi is the mother of eight kids and four of them are the victims of a mysterious disease prevails in Bin Qasim Town.
Mai Soni's eldest son Manzoor and daughter Fatima have with the passage of time also become mentally disabled. Second son and husband are the bread winners of the Mai Soni's home.
A mysterious disease had started showing up its symptoms among the resident of Bin Qasim Town some two years back. Health Minister Dr Sagheer along with his team visited the Bin Qasim Town and ordered a medical camp to be set up there for the research and the help of the affected residents of area. The camp remained there for some time but the promise of continuous provision of health facility and wheel chairs never materialised.
It was promised to us that skill development projects would be initiated in the area but nothing happened complains a resident. A team of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) also visited the area and had given some forms to be filled up and promised them to come back but nothing happened. Mai Soni requests that some NGOs must open their centres there for their rehabilitation or some philanthropist must come forward at least to feed them.
Education facilities are rare in Bin Qasim Town. A college building was seen under construction which as per the area people is under construction for the last so many years. Instead people's peace committee office was established there. The use of narcotics is common in the Bin Qasim Town. Eesa, father of six, is a fisherman but he and all other male members of the family are hooked on drugs.
Eesa's four daughters, Fatima, Ban Bhan, Gul Shera and Amera have also fallen prey to the mysterious diseases prevailing in the town. But instead of trying to find some treatment for his daughters Eesa spends much of his earnings on drugs. Even Eesa's 10-year-old son is an addict.
Ama Hwa, 75, runs a tea shop to earn living for her widowed daughter and her children. Marrium, Ama Hwa's widowed daughter has five kids; all are studying in different classes. Her husband also died because of drugs and alcohol drinking. Ama Hwa wished to go for Hajj but she has no resources to do it. The area is part of the constituency of Muzaffar Ali Shajra, Minister for Rehabilitation, but what rehabilitation he and his office had done in his own constituency so far? A question mark on his performance?
