Power shortfall has touched to abnormal level of 3000MW during the last 24 hours with fears of further rise on increase in mercury ahead. Power plants including Orient, Saphire, Fauji Kabirwala, Rousch and Saif Power are denied gas supply by the SNGPL, adding electricity shortfall of another 1000MW in the system.
According to the Pepco sources, power generation stood at 10836MW against a demand of 13831MW. Hydel generation remained 3798MW, followed by 1997MW from thermal and 4979MW from IPPs and 62MW from RPPs. Meanwhile, supply to KESC was recorded at 700MW. Meanwhile, despite generation of 68MW from both main units of the Khan Khwar Hydropower Station with availability of water and much likely to be operational third auxiliary unit of 4MW, no considerable improvement in the situation is possible. There are also reports that the Federal government was mulling over two weekly off days like the past year. However, the Punjab government and some of the other notables have opposed the idea due to strong opposition from the traders.
