A significant success regarding artificial breeding of an important riverine fish (Jhali) (Eutroiichthys Vacha) has been achieved by the Punjab Fisheries Department at newly build Biodiversity Hatchery Chashma, District Mianwali.
Director General Fisheries Punjab Muhammad Ashraf while giving details in this regard said that scientists of fisheries department were engaged in the experiments of artificial breeding of this important riverine fish (Jhali) for the last one year.
He said that Jhali fish has wide distribution in Asian countries ie, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Nepal Myanmar and Thailand. He further said that this carnivorous game fish with a delicious taste is found in River Indus in Punjab and its maximum recorded weight is 1350gm and length 40 cm. Director General Fisheries further said that it is a part of development programme to breed all sorts of available endangered fish Fauna and replenish the same by restocking in the natural water bodies.
He said that the Biodiversity hatchery, which is linked with a lake covering an area of more than 100 km and more than 60 species of fish have been identified from this lake. Director General Fisheries, Muhammad Ashraf said that experiments are also being conducted on other distinct species.
