Chairman National Assembly Standing Committee on States and Frontier Regions (Safron), Sajid Hussain Turi on Tuesday urged the government to take action against the militants disrupting peace in the region. Addressing the National Assembly on a point of order, he referred to worsening law and order situation of Kurram Agency and government's failure in implementation of Murree Peace Agreement.
To help restore peace in the restive Kurram Agency, a grand jirga comprising elders from all tribes of the tribal areas brokered peace accord in Murree on October 15, 2008 and bonds of Rs 20 million were signed by the warring tribes of Kurram Agency. Sajid Turi told the house that in a fresh spate of violence 25 people were gunned down while several others were kidnapped and made hostages. The road in my constituency is a no go area for the last four years and the peace agreement through which situation was normalised could not last for long, he added. He cautioned that if immediate steps were not taken for the security of the passengers on Thall-Parachinar road, situation would get even worse. He lamented that the peace accord was violated several times and no action has been taken so far under the agreement.
