The ruling Pakistan People's Party (PPP) MNA Nawab Yousuf Talpur sought justice for his son - MPA Nawab Munawar Talpur - against whom an FIR has been registered on murder charges by DCO Umerkot, Sindh. The matter, which was raised on a point of order by Nawab Yousuf Talpur in the National Assembly on Friday also caused embarrassment to the ruling party, as Talpur along with other treasury and opposition members questioned the 'incompetence' of the government in dealing with bureaucracy.
They condemned the registration of FIR against a sitting member of the provincial assembly belonging to the ruling PPP and the way the bureaucracy dealt with the parliamentarians.
"I am ready to hand over my son to police even I know that the DCO has registered the FIR in a fabricated murder case", Talpur said and also raised question on the ruling PPP saying that if the parliamentarians belonging to the ruling party were dealt with in such a way then what to talk of common man.
Talpur recalled that he was associated with the PPP since 1970 and was in the good books, but he added that it was unfortunate that the parliamentarians were being targeted when their own party was in power. He demanded of the government that the matter should thoroughly investigated by a committee of the House comprising members from the opposition benches or through a judge of a high court so as to ascertain the facts.
Minister for Religious Affairs Syed Khurshid Ahmed Shah, who is also chief whip of the government, saying that the notice has already been taken of the said incident, assured the House that he would contact the provincial government in this regard.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik also assured the House that he would talk to the Home Minister and IG to look into the matter, adding that action would be taken against the DCO if found that he had transgressed his authority. Acting Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi, however, observed that the issue might be referred to the Privilege Committee of the House in case the member is not satisfied when the House would resume sitting on Monday in the evening.
Earlier, PML-Q's MNA Raza Hayyat Hirraj strongly condemned the incident and recommended that the matter should be referred to the Privilege Committee of the House adding strict action should be taken against the DCO to set an example for others. He said that Talpur was a senior parliamentarian and visible action should be taken against the DCO rather instead of mere statements in the House.
Another PPP's MNA Nawab Abdul Ghani Talpur, while condemning the incident asked the government to immediately suspend the DCO, saying that if members of the ruling party were being treated like this what to talk of common man's lot. Meanwhile, speaking on a point of order, PML-Q's MNA Marvi Memon drew the attention of the House towards the flaws in the ongoing national census, saying that it was inappropriate that teachers, deputed for conducting census were paid no travel allowance.
Referring to a report published in some section of media, PML-N's MNA Abdul Qadir Baloch asked the government to tell the nation that under what agreement Pervez Musharraf was sent abroad.
He, while citing the news story, said that Musharraf was sent abroad after he was guaranteed that no case would be initiated against him. He further alleged that Musharraf signed the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) after he got guarantees from the PPP that in future no case would be initiated against him.
