The executive board meeting of the National Accountability Bureau, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has authorised two different inquires against the Excise and Taxation Department KP regarding misuse of impounded vehicles and corruption in motor vehicles registration process.
Separate inquires were authorised in both the cases after receiving numerous complaints by the Bureau, said a press release issued here on Friday. The complainants had alleged that dozens of impounded vehicles were allotted to unauthorised persons without fulfilling legal formalities.
Moreover, Minster for Excise and Taxation, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had already taken notice of misuse of impounded vehicles by the department's personnel and had ordered the Secretary Excise and Taxation to take immediate remedial steps to stop this misuse and computerise the whole record.
The second inquiry was authorised against the Excise and Taxation personnel who, with the collusion of contractor, have committed the offence of corruption while registering motor vehicles. It was reported that compensation claim of Rs 23 million had been assessed to be paid to the contractor against the number plates and registration books that had been declared redundant after change of name of the province from NWFP to KP.
The NAB (KP) would be inquiring to ascertain the actual quantity of futile number plates and registration booklets as mass variation in the actual and assessed quantity of number plates and registration books was reported. NAB (KP) would further inquire about the circumstances under which a Build, Operate and Transfer (BOT) contract with the supplier was revised besides aspects of the registration process including price of the number plate, price of the registration book and involvement of the personnel in fake registration of vehicles.
