Abnormal water flows rise to 2,35,000 cusecs

There was an abnormal rise in the water inflows of the four live rivers when they rose to 2,35,000 cusecs on Monday due to significant rains in the upper catchment areas of Indus, Jhelum, Chanab and Kabul during the past three days
According to 18th April river flows and reservoirs level report of Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) water flow rose 51,500 cusecs in river Indus at Tarbela 37,900 cusecs in river Kabul at Nowshera, 92,800 cusecs in river Jhelum at Mangla and 55,300 cusecs in river Chanab at Marala headworks.
Of these flows Indus River System Authority is releasing 1,50,000 cusecs water into the irrigation network of the country, the biggest in the world, and retaining about 75,000 cusecs water in reservoirs, Tarbela, Mangla and Chashma.
Irsa is releasing 25,000 cusecs water downstream the Tarbela Dam and 42,000 cusecs downstream the Mangla dam which has enabled PEPCO to produce 3080 MW electricity from its hydel power generation units against past week's average production of 2400 MW.
Due to rains in the catchment areas of river Jhelum, IRSA has stored about 0. 7 MAF water in the Mangla dam which will be used during pre-monsoon period for sowing of strategic Kharif crops including cotton, rice and sugarcane in the month of May and June.
In its weather report Met Office said few thunderstorm/ rain is likely to occur over north Punjab, Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhawah, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir on Tuesday. It said scattered rain/thunderstorm occurred in Upper Punjab (including Islamabad/ Rawalpindi), Upper Khyber Pakhtunkhawa on Monday as under
