Prime Minister asked to explain Davis's release: opposition parties join hands against drone attacks
Opposition parties in the National Assembly on Tuesday joined hands to strongly condemn US drone attacks in tribal areas and asked the Prime Minister to convene a special in-camera session to take parliament into confidence on the drone strikes, release of American national Raymond Davis, and target killing of non-settlers in Balochistan.
The two main opposition parties--PML-N and PML-Q--said that US drone attacks have raised serious questions about the country's sovereignty, and asked the government to take appropriate measures to stop the continuing violations of the country's sovereignty.
They vowed to launch a drive against drone attacks, while PML-N hinted that it would stage a sit-in if the government did not undertake concrete measures to stop the drone strikes. "The nation has now realised that due to the poor performance of the executive, the country is witnessing drone attacks almost on daily basis that have raised serious questions of the country's sovereignty", said PML-N member Saad Rafiq on a point of order.
He asked the Prime Minister, who was present in the House at that time, either to convene an in-camera session of the Parliament to take the members into confidence or brief the national political leadership on these subjects in PM House on the drone attacks, explain circumstances of release of Raymond Davis and the target killing of non-settlers in Balochistan. "If you can't tell the nation, then you must convene the national leadership in the PM House and share with them if any interest of the country was served in the release of Davis", Rafiq asked the Prime Minister.
He also cautioned the government that a new 'Bangladesh' was about to emerge in Balochistan, where the target killing of the non-settlers was continuing, and added that "if you (Prime Minister) are unable to address these issues then the opposition would be compelled to stage sit-in to protest against the government.
PML-Q's leader Waqas rejected the impression that only PML-N was against the drone attacks and said that his party would also launch a protest drive in the coming days. Referring to the other day's statement of the Prime Minister in the House, he said that the premier should give practical shape to his statement regarding the drone attacks. He urged the government to implement the joint resolution of the Parliament on national security for the integrity of the country. He also asked the government not to create uncertainly among the people with confusing statements by the ministers but give courage to the nation to cope with the internal as well as external challenges.
