Embezzlement of Rs 2.296 million in GPO: Accountability court sentences eight including six officials
Accountability Court-II on Tuesday convicted eight people involved in a financial scam of Rs 2.296 millions in General Post Office. National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had filed a reference against six staffers of GPO and two private persons involved in the scam.
The court handed down eight-year term each to Asad Mahmood and Malik Sajjad besides Rs 1 million fine, as the prosecution proved charges against them. Asif Ali sentenced to six years in jail along with Rs 0.5 million fine while Mohammd Farooq, Mohammad Akhtar, Mohammad Arshad and Saleem Raza were awarded three years imprisonment and fine of Rs 100,000 each.
In case of non-payment of fine, the convicts will face an additional one-year imprisonment. The convicts were charged for opening saving account in 2007 and transferred funds of GPO in it. Later, they managed to refunds the money by entering fake claims.
