The European Union and the Gulf Co-operation Council reiterated their support for the Libyan rebel Transitional National Council, in statement after a meeting in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday. The EU and GCC stressed that Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi's "regime has lost its legitimacy and expressed support to the Transitional National Council as a legitimate interlocutor representing the aspirations of the Libyan people," according to a statement.
They also called "for an immediate and genuine cease-fire" in Libya. EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton emphasised at a news conference in Abu Dhabi that a quick transfer of power in Libya is the aim. "We remain resolute in seeking a rapid transition of power in Libya," Ashton said.
Meanwhile, UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahayan said: "No doubt, we hope for a political solution for the situation in Libya, but unfortunately, we don't see that the leadership in Tripoli has until now reached a real conviction that they should make this decision... (that) is for the good of the Libyan people."
Abdullah said he has met several rebel leaders and have "looked into means for developing connections between the UAE and the national council." International forces have been carrying out air strikes on forces loyal to Kadhafi since March 19, in a mission headed by Nato since March 31. GCC members the UAE and Qatar are the only Arab states to send warplanes for operations over Libya.
