China would provide most of the funds for the construction of 32 small/medium dams in two phases across the country. Federal Minister for water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar, said this while replying to questions in the National Assembly on Friday. He said that China government was funding for the construction of small and medium dams.
He said that there was some issue of funds due to cut in PSDP for flood in the country. He said that the government entrusted WAPDA to carryout planning and construction of 32 small/medium dams across the county in two phases (Phase-I, 12 and Phase-II, 20 dams).
While replying to a question, he said, "We are not going for international agencies for funding of small dams. Lot of funds have been secured and some are in process."
In Sindh, he said that project of Nai Gaj Dam would be started in May and completed in April 2014 while work on Darawat Dam would start in June and completed in May, 2013.
In Balochistan, the Minister said that Naulong Dam, Winder Dam, Hingo Dam, Garuk Dam and Pelar would start in the current year and completed in 2014. Referring to KPK/FATA, he said that work on Tank Zam Dam, Bara Dam, Daraban Zam Dam would start in September and completed in August 2014.
In Punjab, the Minister said that work on Ghabir Dam and Papin Dam would start this year and completed in 2014. Replying to another question, he said that Allai Khwar and Duber Khwar Hydropower Projects are under construction by WAPDA in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. However, while replying to supplementary question of the members the minister said that 130 MW Duber Khawar project costing Rs 16.324 billion has almost been completed while 121 MW Allai Khwar project costing Rs 13.132 billion is under construction.
