Presidential committee on cotton productivity enhancement will meet next week to look into the implementation of earlier decisions on increase in cotton productivity. The meeting will be held in the presidency, said sources. The committee had met earlier on April 19 to chalk out a work plan for implementation of decisions on cotton productivity.
Sources said it was decided in the meeting that the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) should also be involved in seed treatment and distribution to avoid malpractice. The effect of GST on fertiliser and pesticide was also worked out.
On the ridge and drills, sources said, the president had desired to have the ID of the growers to whom the ridges and drills are supplied, along with complete address. Further, directions were given to Minfa to explore the possibility of introducing serial and code number on the bags/packing of seed, pesticide and weeicide to ensure traceability back to the company, in case of adulteration.
Regarding public-private partnership for the operation of PCCC the basic model presented by the Aptma was agreed and it was decided to make a subcommittee to work out details of implementation. Participants of the meeting also decided to field practical efforts to bring command area of Mirrani Dam in Balochistan and Gomal Zam in KP under cotton cultivation.
It was also pointed out in the meeting that early sowing of cotton would affect the quality of cotton seed for the next crop. The president advised to create a system of differentiating seed lots harvested for the purpose, or during the season, with truthful labelling of likely germination and required seed rate.
