The Local Council Associations (LCAs), Multan leader Mian Faisal Mukhtar Ex-City District Nazim, under the banner of 'Jeevay Pakistan Jeevay Maqami Hakoomat', demanded that the government should accept the basic importance of union councils under the LGO 2001.
He said that keeping in view the clause 77 and 78 of the ordinance, tehsil resources and authorities should be given to the unions, and those of the unions should be given to the villages. He said that after the MQM-PPP accord, they had geared up their campaign to contact other political parties to persuade the latter to hold LG elections immediately.
Referring to the April 13, 2010, verdict of the Supreme Court, wherein the apex court had ordered the restoration of public safety commissions to implement Police Order 2001 and inform the court about it within one month, the LCA leader said that unfortunately the decision of the court was yet to be honoured despite the passing of one year. He said that owing to non-implementation of court orders, people were not getting their democratic rights for local self-governance. He said these delaying tactics would not benefit anyone. He also demanded that the government implement the court orders on safety commissions by August 14, adding, if the safety commissions were not restored, Nazimeen would be compelled to devise their next strategy. He also appealed to the chief justice of Pakistan, to pass immediate decisions on the cases regarding delay in LG polls and appointment of administrators in place of nazims pending in high courts in all the four provinces in accordance with the constitutional provisions.
He appreciated the Pakistan People's Party (PPP)-Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) accord on holding local government (LG) elections in accordance with Local Government Ordinance (LGO) 2001, said the Sindh Assembly in February 2009 had passed the LG Act to hold LG elections within 65 days, but it had still not done so even after the passage of one year.
