Pakistan Muttahida Kisan Mahaz (PMKM) has said that India, through dialogues on water issue, wants to get green signal from Pakistan for Wullur Barrage, Kishanganga Dam and completion of Uri-I and II projects, which would give it complete control over the waters of Jhelum River.
Addressing a press conference here Thursday, PMKM Chief Muhammad Ayub Khan Mayo termed Pakistan - India water talks an 'eyewash' so that India could complete its ongoing illegal irrigation and hydel power projects. He said they think that the ongoing secretary-level talks will not benefit Pakistan. He warned that completion of the projects would play havoc with Pakistan's economy and turn millions of acres of land barren besides ruining environment, ecology, aquatic and wildlife, livestock and agriculture in an area of 208 kilometres of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (Kel to Muzaffarabad).
He further said that these projects would result in closure of hydel power pumps and drip irrigation and uplift irrigation systems being used in these areas for agriculture and horticulture in Azad Kashmir, depriving 600,000 Kashmiri people of their livelihood. This would also give India control over Pakistani rivers as it could stop flow of water in the rivers at will to damage important crops in Central Punjab, he maintained.
Mayo announced to hold a series of demonstrations from June 15, 2011 on Indo-Pak border from Kashmir to Mona Bao to press India to abide by Indus Basin Water Treaty 1960 in letter and spirit. These demonstrations will be held from Kashmir to Wagha, Wagha to Bedian, Bedian to Ganda Singh Wala, Ganda Singh Wala to Head Sulemanki and Mona Bao Border (Sindh) in phases to highlight Indian water aggression, he said and warned that responsibility of any untoward occurring during these demonstrations would be on India.
He noted that India is using American influence on Pakistan to get validation of its water aggression against Pakistan and this Indian-US collaboration would cause devastation to Pakistan's industrial and agricultural sectors. PMKM considers India a violator of human rights for violation of Indus Basin Water Treaty and is of the opinion that it has imposed water and economic wars on Pakistan through such steps. He also criticised silence of Pakistani rulers on these conspiracies being hatched by India. He contended that rulers and politicians are well aware of Indian and American agenda but they are 'keeping mum to save their government'.
PMKM chief vowed that his organisation would continue protest movement and holding demonstrations to expose Indian conspiracy of depriving Pakistan from its due share of water under the 1960 Indus Basin Water Treaty, till India accepts to implement the treaty in letter and spirit.
