The Ministry of Information and Technology has been considering various options on how to deal with the official website of Unites States' spy agency CIA which encourages Urdu and Pushto speaking youths to apply and work as CIA operatives against salary ranging from $51,630 to $94,837 per annum.
Although the website does not contain any provocative material like anti-religion, anti-state, in line with government policy to minimise the penetration of any foreign spy agency in the country's affairs, the Ministry has taken notice of it, an official of the Ministry told this correspondent.
The CIA website says: "If you speak a language or two; are culturally aware, you've greatly enhanced your chances of landing a job at the spy agency". The diverse CIA workforce goes beyond race, ethnicity and heritage. Language skills are at the forefront of the agency's requirements for employment in this part of the world.
The website does not contain information about the number of vacancies available for this part of the world but noted that the work force consisting of those who are proficient in a language other than English last year increased by 25 percent.
A defence expert said that the CIA has to hire a multi-ethnic workforce to ensure that its operatives can deal with people speaking different languages in the world. "You can be a better intelligence officer with language capability", the expert said.
With threats potentially coming from around the globe, the CIA is also looking for people who speak Chinese, Korean and Dari. Students graduating are actively recruited by the agency. It has been reported that the key demographic groups, including Americans of Middle East and South Asian backgrounds are being recruited by the State Department, FBI, the National Security Agency and the Defence Intelligence Agency, among others.
Through hiring and training, CIA wants to double the number who are proficient in languages and increase the number of officers who are skilled in mission-critical languages such as Arabic, Pushto, Urdu, Persian, Russian, Korean and Chinese by 50 percent.
CIA chief was quoted as saying," Our clandestine service officers must be able to collect intelligence overseas by speaking to sources in their own language, by blending in with local people". In all, about 335 American personnel, including CIA officers and contractors and Special Operations forces, are being asked to leave the country in the aftermath of the unilateral US Operation Geronimo claiming to have killed bin Laden in Abbottabad.
It is not clear how many CIA personnel would remain in the country as the total number in Pakistan has not been disclosed. But the cuts demanded by the Pakistanis amount to 25 to 40 percent of United States Special Operations forces in the country, the official said. The number also includes the removal of all American contractors used by the CIA in Pakistan. Another category of American intelligence agents, declared operatives whose purpose was not clear, were also being asked to leave, the official said.
