The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani's visit to steadfast partner China has made it clear that Beijing wants us to do more to become self-reliant. Chinese reluctance to provide cash support has not only brought limits of Beijing's co-operation to the limelight but also given message that they are eager to help Pakistan to stand on its own feet, it said.
Dr Murtaza Mughal, President PEW, said in a statement: "It was time to realise that no country can offer unlimited charity and we should not always try to get more out of trusted friends.
He said that like America and Saudi Arabia, China's commitment to Pakistan has its limits that we must keep in mind; adding that "we should learn to serve our interests without looking to others".
A reason for reluctance of donors and friendly countries was the fact that funds raised by taxes and aid were spent lavishly with little scrutiny, he said.
He said that the capability of Pak leaders to raise revenues and get benefit of foreign support has always remained questionable.
Despite shared perceptions on major issues, China has given message that it would never step into the shoes of United States, which is Pakistan's major donor, said Dr Mughal.
