The security czars in the Capital are planning action against shanties and slums dwellers after reports some residents have been sheltering terrorists. In the wake of growing threats of terror strikes from al Qaeda and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the federal government has also decided to check the illegal Afghan refugees, residing in the Capital.
This decision was taken in two separate meetings co-chaired by Federal Minister for Interior, Rehman Malik and Federal Law Minister Maula Bukhsh Chandio. Chairman Capital Development Authority (CDA) and Chief Commissioner Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) have been directed to carry out a detailed survey regarding expansion of Katchi Abadis, illegal residences of Afghan refugees and illegal immigrants.
The survey should be completed within one-week and details be provided to Interior Ministry so that proper action plan be devised to deal with these slums which are posing threat to security of the capital, the meeting decided, adding that action will be initiated on the recommendations of Chairman CDA and Chief Commissioner Islamabad.
These meetings were also attended by Secretary Interior Qamar Zaman Chaudhry, Director General (DG) National Crises Management Cell, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Islamabad Wajid Ali Durrani, Chairman CDA, Chief Commissioner Islamabad, DIG Operations, DIG Security, representatives of ICT administration and other law enforcement agencies and intelligence agencies, besides officials of the interior ministry.
The participants of the meeting have also decided to review bye-laws of CDA and ICT regarding encroachments within the urban areas of Islamabad. The minister took an aerial view of the security arrangements of the capital, while Capital Police chief and representatives of law enforcement and intelligence agencies also accompanied him. The minister, during his aerial view of the capital pointed out the shanties in the capital. The minister voiced his concern over spread of slums in Islamabad and other parts of the country where illegally migrated Afghan refugees are residing. These illegally migrated Afghan refugees are moving in every nook and corner of the Capital without any proper check by police and law enforcement agencies.
The meeting discussed in length the security situation of country in general and security arrangements of the federal Capital Islamabad in particular. The minister was given a detailed briefing by Islamabad Police about the security measures taken to secure Islamabad. During the meeting, it was decided that security of Islamabad will be enhanced on all incoming routes and check posts. All SDPOs and SHOs of the Capital Police have been directed to check new arrivals and any other suspicious activity in their respective areas in order to curb unlawful activities.
