University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS) Institute of Biochemistry and Biotechnology (IBBT) has developed a bio-informatics software for analysis of molecular biology data to develop 'phylogenetic trees' and deal with identifying and understanding the evolutionary relationship among different organisms, both extant and extinct.
UVAS Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr Muhammad Nawaz revealed this during a briefing about HEC conference/exhibition on 'Setting Standard for the 21st Century Pakistan: varsities building economy', here on Saturday. All faculty members were present on the occasion.
Dr Nawaz said that 'UVAS has entered in a new era of development of bio-informatics software and developed the unique software first time in Pakistan. Foreseeing the importance of new emerging fields of science, UVAS took the initiative of establishing and initiation new disciplines such as bio-informatics.
He said that varsities are producing finished products of leadership, innovative mindset and intellectuals that are playing their role to resolve national challenges and problems. Earlier, IBBT Director, Professor Dr Masroor Elahi Baber informed that the software was developed using BioJava and Forester, the latest Java based platforms for software development, which understand relevant problems and analyses molecular biology data.
He apprised the new software is vibrant, comparatively easy to learn, operate and understand with many unique features not offered in already available software of its kind. The relationships established by phylogenetic software also describe a species' evolutionary history and the relationships among organisms or their genes, he added.
