Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU) Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Masoom Yasinzai said that corruption is the biggest threat being faced by the country today. "In every field of life you have come across the menace of corruption. It is the youth which has to fight and eradicate the menace" Yasinzai said, while addressing a seminar "Role of Youth in Governance" on Tuesday organised by the Debating and Literary Society Quaid-i-Azam University in collaboration with Transparency International Pakistan.
The main objective of the seminar was to create awareness among youth about their role for improving governance and fighting corruption. Dr Safeer Awan Student Advisor International Islamic University (IIU) while addressing said that throughout the history young people have played very important role. They have been on the forefront of the different revolutions. He mentioned the recent example of Middle East where youth is leading the old generation towards a change.
He said plateforms like Transparency International are playing very important role to create socio political consciousness among youth. He said in the era of globalisation it is the responsibility of our youth to be vigilant about new developments.
He said the transparency, accountability, good leadership; respect for human rights, rule of law; democracy and fair competition for public office are the elements which are inevitable to ensure the good governance. He also emphasised the need to understand the true sprit of democracy. "Democracy is the name of justice, equality, sharing and togetherness. Our youth should understand democracy not only as system, but also as an attitude" he added.
Raouf Khalid, Vice Chancellor, National Institute of Cultural Studies (NICS) said that one day Pakistani people would rise up and get rid of the power and money hungry rulers and would governed by selfless people having the traits of vision and courage.
