Zheng Jie, China's 2008 Wimbledon semi-finalist, made it through to the second round on Wednesday with a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Zuzana Ondraskova of the Czech Republic. There was little to separate the pair in the first set but Zheng raced away with the second to book a clash with either US 30th seed Bethanie Mattek-Sands or Misaki Doi of Japan.
Zheng joins compatriots Li Na, the French Open winner, and Peng Shuai in the round of 64. The Chinese number four broke in the first game but Ondraskova hit back to make it 5-5 when Zheng was serving for the first set. But the Chinese player then broke again and held serve to claim the hour-long set. The Czech player, ranked 110 in the world, has only won two matches all year and was blown away in the second set.
Despite her run to the last four in 2008, Zheng, now the world number 84, has only made one other foray past the second round at the All England Club. Zheng, 27, now has a 2-0 lead on Ondraskova, having won their only previous encounter in straight sets on the Estoril clay in 2006.
