Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has broadened the scope of investigation in the theft of 11 locomotive's radiators worth Rs 25 million, stolen from Railway Workshop, by including 12 Railway Police officials in the investigation, Business Recorder has learnt reliably.
Pakistan Railways (PR) is facing shortage of locomotives, which is badly hampering its operations. Radiators of the 11 locomotives, which have been brought to the Loco Shed for servicing, were reportedly stolen and now the locomotives are rusting there. Sources said that the radiators costing Rs 25 million had not developed any fault but were allegedly stolen from the machine shop. Out of 11 radiators, seven were removed in October and four in December last year, informed sources revealed. These radiators were imported from China and Germany weighing 250 kg each.
Assistant Mechanical Eng. Loco Shed Rana Amanullah and five others lodged an FIR of theft. However, after an inquiry the FIA arrested them and registered a case against them. Sources said that Railway Police was fully involved in the theft, but the FIA arrested only railway officials. However, now FIA has started investigation against the 12 police constables, although they have not been taken into custody. No high-ups of the police was under investigation, they added.
Initially, former chairman Railways Raja Muhammad Shahid constituted a four-member fact finding committee headed by Deputy Chief Engineer, Carriage Factory to probe the theft. Divisional Personnel Officer, Fayyaz Khan, DN-I, Inam Ullah Mahsud, DSP Railways Police, Raja Zaheer were its members. The committee was given the task to fix the responsibility for the disappearance of the radiators.
The inquiry committee concluded that all radiators were stolen. The committee in its report recommended investigation against those involved in this scam by National Accountability Bureau (NAB) or FIA, besides recovery of the radiators. However, the matter has become complicated with a dissenting note by the Railway police.
