Professor Dr Adibul Hasan Rizvi said despite organ and tissue transplantation law in the country, illegal trade of organs is still going on. He was addressing a press conference organised by Transplantation Society of Pakistan (TSP) here on Monday. On multiple occasions we have pointed out this heinous crime but the government and the relevant authorities have not paid due attention.
Previously, also we had pointed out the tragic death of a Omani national after an illegal transplantation procedure in Lahore. Professor Rizvi pointed out that before the formation of Human Organ and Tissue Transplantation Law; the illegal transplant centres had access to the world by advertising on the web.
Rich buyers travelled to Pakistan from Europe, Middle East and India. Transplant trade became an industry as foreigners used to pay $20,000 to $30,000 for a transplant package. This rampant and unchecked trade exploited the poor and needy population. Pakistan had become the cheap organ bazaar in the world.
After the passing of above mentioned law, although the incidence of this illicit trade decreased but unfortunately did not stop all together and also has rather shifted from known hospitals to private bungalows. On the First of July, one such bungalow was raided upon where this illegal organ trade was going on. Now it is up to the government and the concerned authorities to take legal action against the culprits involved in this inhuman crime and also apprehend others who are involved in this business.-PR
