Petition for registering treason case against Musharraf: LHC gives last chance to federal government for filing reply
The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday gave last opportunity to federal government to file its reply in a petition seeking registration of case against president General Pervez Musharraf (retired) for committing high treason and issuance of red warrants for his extradition through Interpol to initiate proceedings against him under article 6 of the constitution.
Taking strict notice of casual attitude of the government, the court observed, it would proceed ex parte in the case, if federal government failed to file reply till next date of hearing on July 13. The constitutional petition was filed by Rana Ilmuddin Ghazi, who prayed that a case should be registered against Musharraf for high treason and red warrants may be issued for his extradition through Interpol for his trial under article 6 of the constitution.
The petitioner alleged that the former army chief had dissolved an elected parliament without "any cogent reason." He prevented judges of the Supreme Court and four High Courts from performing their judicial duties and detained Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry along with his children.
Accusing General Musharraf (Retd) of killing thousands of Hafiz-e-Quran girls and boys during the Jamia Hafsa operation in Islamabad, the lawyer said that the former president also compelled Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan to accept charges of illegally selling nuclear technology, which tarnished the country's image abroad.
