Appointment of former judges as tribunals' head: notices issued to Punjab government, Secretary Services
The Lahore High Court (LHC) again issued notices to Punjab government and secretary services and sought replies within fortnight in a petition challenging appointments of former judges, Justice Jahangir Arshad as chairman Punjab Services Tribunal, and Justice Afzal Hameed Cheema as Chairman Labour Appellate Tribunal.
Earlier, a law officer requested the court to grant further time file replies. The court accepted his request and adjourned hearing for two weeks. The petition has been filed by a local lawyer pleading that the appointment of both retired judges were in violation of national judicial policy. He said under the judicial policy and as per Supreme Court's judgements, a retired judge or other government servants could not be re-appointed.
