Multan Chamber Commerce & Industry and Smeda jointly organised a seminar on Quail Breeding, here on Tuesday. Dr Muhammad Akram of University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences said that production of the various quail breeds and their eggs could be very profitable.
Dr Akram further said that Quail meat is an ideal food and according to Islam it is not forbidden. Japanese quails are very delicious. Quails are quickly replacing the chicken broiler due to their high nutritive value. Quail meat has less fat and fewer calories, forming an ideal food for health conscious consumers.
He said that Quail eggs and meat is rich in vitamins, essential amino acids, unsaturated fatty acids and phospholipids, which are vital for human physical and mental development. Quail meat and eggs could be included in the diets of children and pregnant mothers. They are an essential part of the diet of socially and economically weaker sections of the society.
He said that the consumption of white meat is increasing due to growing health consciousness among the masses. Statistics of Pakistan reveals the per capita consumption of poultry meat is increasing at a rate of 4% per annum. The existing daily availability of protein quantity per capita in Pakistan deriving from animal source including beef, mutton, poultry and fish combined amounts to 11 grams.
This is far less than the recommended daily dietary protein allowance from animal source of 26 grams according to the World Health Organisation standards. Regional Business Co-ordinator, Aleena Durrani said that Smeda would help the rural women in quail farming by providing them soft loans and providing them technical assistance for establishing their farms. She said in the last ten years, the little known Japanese quail [Coturnix Japanica] has been introduced to the Pakistan as an alternative avian species in the progressing of poultry industry to mitigate chronic protein deficiency among the Pakistani population.
