The hours-long and continued load shedding by Karachi Electricity Supply Company (KESC) has pushed up demand for electricity generators, emergency lights and UPS considerably. The increase in generators' demand is directly linked with the prolonged and persistent load shedding in the city. The sale of generators, emergency lights and UPS has increased, as people are looking for alternatives to offset the massive load shedding.
Dealers of generators, UPS and rechargeable lights said that the recent spell of power outages in the city had pushed up sales of UPS and generators by 70 per cent as compared to corresponding period of the previous year. Prices of generators, UPS and rechargeable lights vary in different localities. The UPS including battery with a capacity to run two fans and two bulbs costs around Rs 11,500, for three tube lights and three fans the price comes to Rs 13,500 while the UPS with batteries to run four fans and four tube lights costs Rs 20,500. All these prices include installation charges.
Demand of Chinese genitors is high as compared to imported generators from Japan, Korea and Turkey due to price difference. A salesman at a generators shop said some of the popular brands, which come from China, includes Hony, Jesko, Yamma, Lifan and Power Tiger were in great demand, which range from one KV to 5 KV.
Chinese generator of 2.5 KV carries price tag of Rs 25,000 as compared to Rs 45,000 of Japanese brand. A 5 KVA generator is priced at Rs 32, 500 as against Rs 90, 000 for Japan made. Another dealer said for a couple of weeks, demand for back-up power supplies had increased, as everyone was anticipating that neither the government nor the KESC had any solution to get rid of long hours load shedding.
