Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon on Tuesday pleaded the Supreme Court to withdraw the contempt of court notice, issued to him over the protest against the court verdict in Chairman's NAB case. In pursuance of court's order, Sharjeel Memon filed his reply in the court in a contempt of court notice issued to him.
The Court on March 26 had issued contempt notices to Sindh People's Party leaders Taj Haider and Sharjeel Memon for criticising the court verdict in Chairman NAB case. The court had directed PPP Sindh leaders, Taj Haider and Sharjeel Memon, to file their replies.
The court had taken notice of the March 11 violence-ridden strike in Karachi and other parts of Sindh that killed five people and injured scores of others. The SC on March 26 had served contempt notices on general secretary of PPP's Sindh chapter, Taj Haider, and the party's provincial media co-ordinator, Sharjeel Inam Memon, for allegedly ridiculing a court ruling and instigating people against it.
In his reply, Sharjeel Memon submitted that a very wrong and negative perception was taken by the people of Sindh as well as other parts of the country about disqualification of former judge Deedar Hussain Shah, former Chairman NAB and the timely decision of the strike was made in order to safeguard any type of uncontrollable situation which had been witnessed on many occasions in the past and known to everybody in the country.
He further submitted that while making the quoted statement there was no intention to commit contempt of the court and the same was mere a fair and healthy comment on the decision of the apex court. "The statement, unfortunately, has been misconstrued as no Judge was ridiculed nor scandalised," he contended.
It is worth mentioning that the SC while serving contempt notices on the PPP Sindh leaders had quoted a statement of Taj Haider that legislators would take out a rally from the Sindh Assembly building to the Sindh High Court to lodge a protest against what was described as "politically-motivated decisions of the superior judiciary" and that there would be a general strike across Sindh against the "interference of the judiciary in administrative affairs."
Sharjeel Memon further submitted in his reply that the apex court while looking into the statement of the respondent may also take into account all the other statements of political leadership, media analysts, citizens, religious leaders and members of the civil society of the country, which were made right after the judgements passed by the apex court in respect of Mukhtaran Mai case, Raymond Davis case, NRO cases etc and regarding so many other cases.
